Women's Cross Country, Women's Soccer Teams Advance in NCAA Postseasons
Over the weekend, the women's cross country and women's soccer teams extended their fall campaigns with thrilling postseason victories.
The women's cross country team made history on Saturday, capturing its first-ever NCAA Metro Region championship at the Gloucester County DREAM Park in Logan Township, N.J.
With the victory, the Garnet also qualified as a team for the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history. Swarthmore showed off its depth and dominated the field in the 6K race, totaling a program-best 71 points and topping second-place The College of New Jersey by 32 points.
Six Garnet runners finished in the top 35 to garner All-Region recognition, the most for the squad in the past 15 years. Olivia Montini ’26 led the way followed by Elizabeth Page ’28, Ania Wong ’28, Charlotte Martin ’28, Téa Malone-Bonacci ’27, and Aaliyah Anaskevich ’28.
The Garnet will battle for a national title on Nov. 22 in Spartanburg, S.C. It will be the fourth time at nationals for Montini, who has earned All-Region honors in every year of her career.
In Cleveland, the 13th-ranked women's soccer team battled late into Sunday night against host and sixth-ranked Case Western Reserve University and advanced to the round of 16 after upsetting the Spartans in a shootout. The teams couldn't break a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes and Swarthmore prevailed 3-0 in penalty kicks.
Aminah Evans ’28, Liesel Blau ’27 and Celia Kanellakos ’28 answered the call for the Garnet, burying the first three penalty kicks. Goalkeeper Lila Travers ’26, who entered the game late in the second half, was equally perfect. The senior rose to the occasion with one save in the shootout, while the Spartans missed wide on their other two attempts.
Charlotte Carleton ’27 provided the scoring for the Garnet in regulation, tallying a goal in just the sixth minute of the game. The night before, a Carleton hat trick helped lead Swarthmore to a 4-2 victory over Bridgewater College (Va.) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Garnet will take its postseason run to Chicago in the Round of 16, squaring off against Carleton College on Nov. 22. The four-team pod will be hosted by No. 7 University of Chicago.
