Swarthmore College welcomes three new members to its Board of Managers: Michael Costonis ’92, Jyothi Das ’92, and Jim Sailer ’90. Together, they bring decades of leadership experience across the private, nonprofit, and global development sectors, along with a deep commitment to the values that have long defined a Swarthmore education.

“We are grateful to these accomplished alumni for their willingness to share their time, talents, and experience with Swarthmore,” says Board Chair Harold “Koof” Kalkstein ’78. “I know they will bring valuable insight and perspective to the Board as we work with the entire Swarthmore community to strengthen the College for generations to come.”

Michael Costonis

Michael Costonis ’92

Michael Costonis ’92 brings to the Board more than 30 years of leadership in the insurance, technology, and consulting industries. Known for guiding organizations through growth and transformation, he has helped shape strategy, strengthen operations, and build high-performing teams in complex global environments.

Most recently, Michael served as chief operating officer and global head of marketing, strategy, and innovation at CNA Insurance, one of the nation’s largest commercial property and casualty insurers. This summer, he joined the board of InvoiceCloud, a leading provider of electronic bill payment solutions. A recognized voice in the industry, his writing has appeared in Harvard Business Review, and he has earned various certifications from the Harvard Business School and MIT.

A political science major at Swarthmore, Michael credits the College with sharpening the analytical skills and curiosity that have guided his career. He lives in Ambler, Pa., with his wife and their two children.

Jyothi Das

Jyothi Das ’92

Jyothi Das ’92 has built her career at the intersection of marketing, education, and consumer goods, with more than two decades of experience identifying new markets and shaping products based on customer insights. She has held leadership roles at Unilever, LeapFrog, LexisNexis, and Revolution Foods.

Today, Jyothi serves as co-president of the Bay Area chapter of Pratham, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding educational and vocational opportunities for women and youth in India and beyond. She also advises DesignFC, a nonprofit founded by Swarthmore graduate Omri Gal ’20 that empowers youth in under-resourced communities through design and self-expression.

At Swarthmore, Jyothi studied English literature and economics, a combination that she says taught her how to combine an understanding of human motivation and storytelling with analysis of market dynamics. She later earned both an MBA and an M.A. in South Asian Studies from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She lives in Menlo Park, Calif., with her husband and their two children.

Jim Sailer

Jim Sailer ’90

Jim Sailer ’90 joins the Board in his role as president of the Alumni Council. He brings with him a career dedicated to public health and nonprofit leadership. Sailer is co-president of the Population Council, a global health research nonprofit that designs and evaluates innovative policies, programs, and products that benefit the world’s most marginalized populations.

Sailer has also served in senior leadership roles across the nonprofit sector, including as chair of InsideNGO, where he helped lead its merger with Mango and LINGOs to create Humentum. He is the chairman of the board of the International Contraceptive Access Foundation and serves on the board of Vennue. Earlier in his career, Sailer conducted research at Harvard Business School, was a strategy consultant in the public and private sectors, and served as the director of accountability for the New York City Department of Education, where he led development of new methods of analyzing school performance.

A political science major at Swarthmore, Sailer says the College’s emphasis on intellectual rigor and social responsibility has shaped both his career and his approach to leadership. He later earned a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School. He lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., with his spouse and their son.
