Black Cultural Center Celebrates Century of Black History Month Commemorations

In recognition of Black History Month, Swarthmore’s Black Cultural Center (BCC) will host a series of events throughout February that reflect on 100 years of Black history commemorations.

This year’s theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” invites the campus community to reflect on how Black history has been celebrated, taught, and preserved over the past centuries, and to consider its enduring significance today.

All events are free and open to the Swarthmore community unless otherwise noted.

Cooking Class with Chef Thomas Ramsey

Friday, Feb. 6 | 2–4 p.m.
Cooking Kitchen (DCC)

Chef Thomas Ramsey, Swarthmore College’s associate director and executive chef, will lead a hands-on cooking class exploring the flavors and traditions of Gullah Geechee cuisine. Participants will learn about the cultural history behind the dishes while engaging in a shared culinary experience.

Celebrate a Black Icon Day

Wednesday, Feb. 11 | 2–3 p.m.
Parrish Parlors

This interactive event invites participants to honor Black leaders, artists, visionaries, civil rights activists, educators, athletes, and performers who have shaped history and continue to inspire today. Attendees are encouraged to creatively represent a Black icon and share how that individual has influenced their lives.

Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

2.43: The (Im)Possible Dream

Book Preview with Dr. Wade Manora Jr.
Tuesday, Feb. 17 | 5–6:30 p.m.
Science Center Room 101 (Chang Hou Hall)

Dr. Wade Manora Jr. will present a preview of his debut book, 2.43: The (Im)Possible Dream, sharing reflections on navigating college, identity, and personal growth. The program will include a reading, a moderated Q&A, and a book signing.

This event is sponsored by the Aydelotte Foundation and co-sponsored by the BCC and the Gender & Sexuality Center.

BCC × Passion4Fashion Club Fashion Show

Friday, Feb. 20 | 6–7:30 p.m.
Upper Tarble

Presented during Swarthmore College Cultural Weekend, this fashion show celebrates Black History Month while also marking 150 years of international students at Swarthmore. Hosted by the BCC in collaboration with the Passion4Fashion Club, the event blends professional runway standards with student creativity, highlighting fashion as both an art form and a powerful medium for cultural expression.

The Importance of Commemorating Black History

Panel Discussion with Campus Partners
Tuesday, Feb. 24 | 4:30–6 p.m.
Kohlberg Hall, Scheuer Room

This panel discussion, hosted by the BCC, will feature campus partners reflecting on why commemorating Black history remains essential. Panelists will explore how honoring the past informs present understanding and contributes to building a more informed and equitable future.

Paul Robeson House Tour

Saturday, Feb. 28 | Time TBD

The month concludes with a visit to the Paul Robeson House Museum in West Philadelphia. This immersive experience highlights the stories, artistry, and legacies of Black communities and icons who have shaped American history.
