Martin Hall

An interdisciplinary technological center and social space for our entire community, Martin Hall supports the curiosity, creativity, and innovation that are the hallmarks of a Swarthmore education.
Connecting the arts and sciences, campus and nature, and the past and future of Swarthmore, the reimagined Martin Hall is home to the Film and Media Studies and Computer Science departments and the Media Center, and houses vital campus resources — including a film production studio, screening room, editing suites, and new computer science classrooms.
Built with sustainability at the forefront of both its design and construction, Martin Hall lives into the College’s commitment to sustainability. The building meets the rigorous standards of the Living Building Core Certification, by centering “intentional resource use and ecosystem impact, regenerative design and construction practices, and the health of building occupants and the surrounding community.”
What's Inside
Geoexchange System
Martin is powered by Swarthmore’s new carbon-free geoexchange system through To Zero by Thirty-Five, and supports the College’s bold and ambitious plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035.
Ecology of Place
Ecology of place is central to Martin Hall’s design, which intentionally integrates the building into the surrounding ecosystem, enhancing native vegetation and supporting local biodiversity.
Inspired Design
In a nod to the beauty of the building’s original Art Deco design, the historic 1936 facade has been preserved and restored to honor the history of the former Martin Biological Laboratory and its legacy at Swarthmore College
Responsible Construction
Martin Hall’s renovation used responsible materials throughout, which were carefully chosen for their sustainability, durability, and low environmental impact
