Highlights:

• MCCABE LECTURE

  Award-winning producer and director Dawn Porter '88 is this year's McCabe Lecturer. She is the co-founder of Trilogy Films, a film and television production company based in New York. Trilogy specializes in social justice documentaries and independent feature films.

  Dawn’s recent film, Gideon’s Army, premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the award for "best edited U.S. documentary."

• CONNECTING SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

  Faculty talk by Giovanna Di Chiro, Lang Professor for Issues of Social Change

  Professor Di Chiro will explore the "three pillars" of sustainability (ecology, economics, and equity) through the critical lens of environmental justice. The presentation will provide examples of sustainability initiatives led by environmental justice organizations focusing on local agriculture, food security, and energy and climate justice. It will also discuss local partnerships and student-led community-based learning projects with community groups in Philadelphia and Chester, Pa. Join us for a reception following the talk to network with members of the sustainability organizations at Swarthmore College.

• THE CONVERGENCE OF ART AND ACTION

  Faculty Talk by Sharon Friedler, Professor of Dance and director of the Dance Program

  Artists worldwide use their talents to fight against injustice and oppression. Explore the artivist (artist + activist) through discussion and video material from student work as well as conversation from Friedler's own extensive experience as an artivist throughout the United States, Italy, Canada, Ghana, Poland, and Wales. Examples of Swarthmore students who have pursued work as artivists will also be featured. Join us following the talk for a networking reception with students who are engaged in social action work.
