SWARTHMORE COLLEGE
ORCHESTRA
The Swarthmore College Orchestra, directed by Andrew Hauze ’04, rehearses every Tuesday night from 7:00-10:00 in Lang Concert Hall, and performs a full concert at the end of each semester. Made up of more than sixty musicians, most SCO members are Swarthmore students, supplemented by members of the faculty, staff, community, and local professionals.
With a repertoire ranging from Purcell to Pärt, the Orchestra is dedicated to bringing great orchestral works to the Swarthmore campus. We are committed to a deep and vital exploration of this powerful, communal form of music-making. (See below for a list of the orchestra’s repertoire over the past five years).
Auditions are held at the beginning of each semester, and are open to all members of the college community.
For more information about the orchestra, please feel free to email the director, Andrew Hauze, at ahauze1@swarthmore.edu.
Concerto Competitio
The SCO holds a concerto competition each January, open to all students. The winner of the competition performs her/his solo work with the orchestra on their spring concert. If you are interested in competing, please email Andrew Hauze for details.
The SCO welcomed distinguished conductor and composer Victoria Bond in November of 2011 to lead our fall retreat.
Special Events
Each semester, the SCO holds an orchestra retreat in Upper Tarble. We spend all day together on a Saturday rehearsing and having lunch. In the fall, we welcome distinguished guest conductors, and in the spring we hold sectionals with experts on wind and string instruments.
