10 Students Selected for President’s Sustainability Research Fellowship

Ten Swarthmore students have been selected for the President’s Sustainability Research Fellowship (PSRF), a high-impact learning experience where students take stewardship over vital sustainability challenges at the College. The program matches motivated students with small teams of staff and faculty mentors to research, develop, and implement projects in a yearlong course and associated internship.
Jordan Ando ’22 and Sarah Weinshel ’22 Receive Goldwater Scholarships

Ando, who plans to pursue a Ph.D. in planetary science, and Weinshel, who seeks to connect cellular and molecular biology with medicine through an M.D./Ph.D., join this year’s class of 409 Goldwater Scholars from across the country.

Ryan Arazi ’21, Madison Snyder ’21 Receive Fulbright Grants

Ryan Arazi '21 and Madison Snyder ’21 earned Fulbrights this year, affirming the College’s status as one of the program’s top producers. A third student, Josephine Thrasher ’21, was offered a Fulbright grant but instead took a job with a research lab at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

English Literature Scholar Bakirathi Mani Examines South Asian American Visual Culture

Bakirathi Mani, professor of English literature and coordinator of the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, spoke about her book Unseeing Empire, which examines South Asian American visual culture in America. The conversation was wide-ranging with topics from South Asian American representation in popular culture to the election of Kamala Harris as the first South Asian and African American female vice president and Mani’s experience as a curator of these images herself.
Philosopher Krista Thomason Awarded National Humanities Center Fellowship

Sociologist Daniel Laurison ’99 Named 2021-22 Andrew Carnegie Fellow

Assistant Professor of Sociology Daniel Laurison ’99 is among the 26 humanities and social science scholars awarded the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship to study the most enduring issues in American society. Nominated by President Valerie Smith, the $200,000 award will allow Laurison to continue his work examining class inequality in political participation.

Ramiro Hernandez ’23 Named Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellow

Hernandez was recently selected for the Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellowship, a program that provides funding, mentorship, and support for student journalists to report on global issues that are rarely covered in the national media. The fellowship is made possible by the three-year partnership between Swarthmore and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.
