Students interested in options to pursue educational studies beyond Swarthmore may want to consider a graduate program. Also, there are some Swarthmore Fellowships available to seniors and alumni for post-baccalaureate work. Of particular interest is the Tyson Fellowship for women planning to enter elementary or secondary education, but do check out the others. For more information, see the Fellowships and Prizes website, or contact Melissa Mandos, Fellowships and Prizes advisor. To note: applications for these fellowships are due by April 20 of each year.

Institute for the Recruitment of Teachers (IRT): Recruits students of color and other scholars interested in diversity and supports them in the process of applying to graduate school and getting funding to pursue masters degrees in education with teacher certification.

Graduate Study in Educational Studies

Swarthmore students pursuing doctoral work in education attend institutions around the country, depending on their area of interest and study; popular choices include policy, teaching in a particular field, bilingual education, educational psychology, and special education.  Department faculty are happy to talk with students about options in their particular area of interest.  We have recently had alumni attend/graduate from the following programs:

• Judy and Howard Berkowitz Fellowship (UPenn). This fellowship funds doctoral study in the History of Education. Admitted in tandem by the History Department and the Graduate School of Education, Berkowitz Fellows will receive a joint Ph.D. in both history and education.
