What We Do Here

Swarthmore College's mission informs, in large part, the focus of the Intercultural Center. In particular, three points of the mission are highlighted:

  • Building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive residential community that enriches our experiences and expands our worldviews
  • Creating opportunities for education and growth among faculty, students, staff, and alumni by sharing in the multitude of talents of the College community, exploring the beauty of our natural environment, and actively engaging in the rich cultural diversity of our region and our world
  • Committing to peace, equity, and social responsibility, rooted in our founding as a co-educational Quaker institution

The Intercultural Center (IC) provides programs and services that support the personal and intellectual development of Asian American, Latine, Multiracial, Native American, Black, Queer (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender), low-income, international, students with disabilities, and first-generation college students at Swarthmore College. In addition, the IC promotes systemic change toward a multicultural perspective across the institution, and fosters community-building and collaboration among diverse groups both within and outside of the college.

The IC is both a physical space (located in Sproul Hall, with the Interfaith and International Student Centers as neighbors) and a department that houses programming around cultural sharing, celebration, and thoughtful interrogation. The IC is often considered a second home to many students on Swarthmore's campus. For others, it is a source of new experiences and information. And for others, the IC is an ally in accomplishing institutional change.
