Salary for investigator/coordinator of summer projects is one or two ninths of annual salary, for one or two months of summer work.

Postdoc salary is set by the granting agency or calculated by Pamela Prescod-Caesar in our H.R. office (ppresco1@swarthmore.edu; x8397).

Student stipends, grants, or fellowships are $4,350 for one summer (10 weeks) of summer research. FICA is not charged on summer stipends. By contrast, student salary is what students are paid in hourly wages to do non-academic work at any time of the year. FICA is charged on this. For information about the student salary pay scale, please contact the Student Employment Office (x8176).

FICA is 7.65% and should be charged on all wages and salaries, including hourly wages earned by students.

Fringe benefits are calculated on the salary of a postdoc or other full-time employee hired under the grant. Fringe includes a full benefits package (medical, life, and disability insurance, retirement) and FICA. The fringe benefit rate varies according to salary; please contact Pamela Prescod-Caesar (ppresco1@swarthmore.edu; x8397) to determine the proper rate.

The mileage reimbursement rate effective 1/1/14 will be 56 cents per mile. If you traveled on or after 1/1/14, use the new rate (56 cents). For travel during the period 7/1/13 - 12/31/13, use the old rate (56.5 cents). If you traveled before 7/1/13, also use the old rate (56.5 cents).

Per diem rates are listed on the U.S. General Services Administration web site.
