Hong Kong-based director Louisa Wei presents her documentary about the life and times of Esther Eng, a San Francisco native known as Hong Kong’s first woman film director. Eng directed 10 Cantonese talkies from 1937 to 1961, most of them lost. She was also a lesbian; her mannish style recalls that of her contemporary, director Dorothy Arzner. Drawing on a treasure trove of photos and clippings, Golden Gate Girls begins to restore Eng to her place in history. (90 min., in English and Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles)
