Each of the Program performance groups is described below and short clips of recent performances representing a variety of styles can be viewed.
Swarthmore College Dancers
This group is constituted each term and includes the students enrolled for most dance repertory courses as well as those students participating in dances made by student choreographers who are doing so for academic credit. A concert, comprised of the dances made in those classes, is held in the Pearson-Hall Theatre of the LPAC at the end of each semester. Short clips below illustrate styles represented in recent concerts.
Dance and Drum Ensemble
This group, which meets each fall semester and is open to all students, focuses on traditional dance, drumming, and song from West Africa (especially Ghana, Mali, and Senegal). Traditional and contemporary forms from Brazil are also often part of the repertoire. Material learned is performed as part of the fall student concert in Pearson-Hall Theatre of LPAC. Short clips of recent concert material can be accessed below.
This ensemble offers the beginning student an experience in traditionally based Japanese drumming repertory. The relationship between drumming and its concomitant movement is emphasized. Material learned is performed as part of the spring student concert in Pearson-Hall Theatre of LPAC. A short clip of recent concert material can be accessed below.
