Department Overview

On a cool, grey morning, members of the Class of 2026 received their degrees at Swarthmore College's 154th Commencement ceremony, held on Sunday, May 24, at the Highmark Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park.

Of the 428 graduates, 401 received the Bachelor of Arts degree and 51 the Bachelor of Science in engineering degree. 24 received dual degrees. A total of 71 students received a level of Honors. Sophia Cáceres ’26, as chosen by her classmates, offered remarks as the senior class speaker. At the ceremony, President Valerie Smith awarded four honorary degrees: a Doctor of Humane Letters to American University President Jonathan Alger ’86, a Doctor of Arts to multi-talented performer Colman Domingo, a Doctor of Laws to children's law advocate Judith Sandalow ’84, and a Doctor of Sciences to environmental educator Talia Young ’01.

Special awards announced at the ceremony included the Oak and Ivy to Joey Driscoll ’26, Hope Dworkin ’26, and Danika Grieser ’26, Lang to William Trone ’26, and McCabe Engineering to Ben Aaron ’26 and Zoe Sperduto ’26.

Mikaela Gonzalez ’26 and Associate Professor of English Literature Sangina Patnaik addressed the senior class at Last Collection on May 22. Speakers at this address, an assembly-style gathering, are chosen by the senior class.

Professor of Educational Studies Diane Anderson addressed the graduating class at Baccalaureate services on May 23 after being introduced by Visiting Assistant Professor of Educaitonal Studies Mark Lewis ’10. The Baccalaureate is the spiritual component of Commencement weekend, featuring the inspirational remarks of a friend of the College.
