Daniel Gallant ’98

box_Dan_Gallant_box_DSCN0037.jpgDaniel Gallant ’98, executive director of the Nuyorican Poets Café since spring 2008, had his monologues recently published in the anthology Best American Short Plays of 2009–2010. His play A Felony in Blue was performed at the Café in October. The play depicts a game of Texas Hold ’em between five gang bosses, the results of which will determine who becomes the major power in the city’s criminal underworld. The New York Times reviewed the play soon after, calling it “Mametian.” Gallant’s work Seven Card Draw—consisting of a series of short pieces that depict how some people react to unsettling situations and what they can be brought to do because of them—was also published in the anthology Best American Short Plays of 2009–2010. Gallant’s play Gerald’s Method was also nominated for best short script for the New York Innovative Theater Awards in 2008. In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Anna Louie Sussman wrote: “Since late 2009, Mr. Gallant has exploited expanding social-media tools to grow the café from a small volunteer-led venue best known for weekly poetry events to a thriving arts center with partnerships across the city.”
