Chris Johnstone ’90

Chris Johnstone ’90 was awarded the prestigious Kato Prize by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel for his workChristopher_Johnstone____90_photo.jpg strengthening United States–Japanese relations as director for Northeast Asia, Office of the Secretary of Defense (Policy). Ryozo Kato, the award’s namesake and former Japanese ambassador to the United States, attended the ceremony. Johnstone was recognized for his efforts in launching a bilateral defense guidelines review, working to ease tensions in the East China Sea, and achieving new progress on bilateral plans to realign U.S. forces on Okinawa in the Western Pacific. At the award ceremony, Secretary Hagel said, “Everyone who works on Asia policy at the Department of Defense knows that Chris has played a critical role in helping this alliance grow, strengthen, and deepen.”
