T. Alexander Aleinikoff ’74

T. Alexander Aleinikoff ’74 has been named the United Nations deputy high commissioner for refugees. His mission is to safeguard the rights and well-being of the more than 34 million refugees and internally displaced people worldwide. According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) António Guterres, “Mr. Aleinikoff brings a rich combination of skills and experience that will serve refugees and the UNHCR extremely well.” Since 2005, Aleinikoff has been executive vice president of Georgetown University and dean of the Georgetown Law Center; he also co-chaired the immigration policy review team for President Barack Obama’s transition. An expert in immigrant policy, Aleinikoff has written a number of books on the topic. Previously, he was a senior associate at the Migration Policy Institute and a senior official with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.
