No ‘Ordinary’ Friend

I’m not an alum, but I’ve lived in Swarthmore almost 25 years; my kids grew up on campus. This spring, I met Sylvia Hand Pott ’52, whose grandparents had lived in my house.

During a visit, I saw the Bulletin—Sylvia joked she was intimidated by how amazing her fellow alumni were.

What? Sylvia is amazing. She is thoughtful, dedicated, and swims, kayaks, bikes, and walks the beach daily. Sylvia has raised four interesting, interested children; she hosts anyone at her home in Cape Cod who needs a safe house and an open heart and mind; she sings with a choral group and is active in politics. She is unlike any 86-year-old I know and yet she describes herself as “just ordinary.”

Please profile Sylvia. I am so proud of my strong, dynamic, caring friend, and that we share a love of learning, life, family, and, of course, Swarthmore.
