Research:
The Watkins group studies how electrons behave in solid state quantum materials with applications in emerging technologies like quantum computing. We employ density functional theory (DFT) calculations to answer questions about how the electrons behave collectively to produce phenomena like magnetism, superconductivity, and unconventional or “topological” states. Our research follows two main directions:
(1) benchmarking computational methods to identify the best strategies for studying these complex materials, and
(2) high-throughput materials screening to understand how chemical composition and structure influence desired properties.
Through these aims, we establish best computational practices and guide materials discovery. Our research bridges chemistry, physics, and materials science, connecting fundamental questions about the nature of electrons with the frontiers of materials design.
