Email This PageChopp Appointed Chancellor at University of Denver, Hungerford Named Interim Swarthmore President
Shortly before magazine press time, it was announced that President Rebecca Chopp would become chancellor of the University of Denver, beginning Sept. 1. Constance Cain Hungerford will serve as interim president of Swarthmore, beginning July 14.
In a message to the campus community, Chopp said, “What an extraordinary privilege it has been to serve on behalf of such a remarkable group of faculty, students, staff, alumni, and parents at Swarthmore. I will remain forever inspired by the brilliance of this special place and its people and also proud of all that we have accomplished during the five years I have been president. Together we have created a strong and vibrant strategic plan for the College and its future, and that is something that we can all be proud of.”
Hungerford is the Mari S. Michener Professor of Art History and an expert in 19th-century French painting. She joined the Swarthmore faculty in 1975 and, among her many administrative positions, was provost from 2001 to 2011.
“The search for our next president will begin in earnest when students and faculty return this fall,” said Gil Kemp ’72, chair of the Board of Managers. “This summer, the Board will lay the groundwork for a search committee to help us find the right president to lead us into the next phase of our work together.”
