Writing Associates Present at National Conference
In October, two Writing Associates attended a joint conference of the International Writing Centers Association and the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing in Las Vegas. Liz Dickey '10 and Anson Stewart '10 to presented a poster they prepared with Joslyn Young '10 that was an extension of their Final Project from English 1C, the training course all WAs take. The poster, entitled "Missing Intersections: Diversity and the Writing Center" discusses diversity in the Swarthmore Writing Program and how representative WAs are of the larger campus population. As attendees at the conference, the students were able to learn a great deal from related presentations, including one entitled "Anti-racism and Peer Tutoring Praxis." They also enjoyed the keynote address, given by a writing center administrator whose work they had read as WAs in training. Since their return, they have been actively sharing the new insights they gained with their fellow WAs through a series of discussions and events.
