COVID-19 Update for March 13

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Late last night, we learned that the Swarthmore Friends Nursery School, which is housed at the Swarthmore Friends Meetinghouse on the Swarthmore College Campus, has closed after a parent of a child at the Nursery School was tested for COVID-19. According to the school’s director, the parent was exhibiting flu-like symptoms. The parent and their family have self-quarantined while awaiting test results, which are expected to be back by Tuesday.

While the Nursery School runs independently of the College, the building is located on College property. Environmental Services and other College personnel conduct some work in the building, but typically not in the portion of the building dedicated to the Nursery School. While the Nursery School tells us that its staff have worked to disinfect the school, out of an abundance of caution, we are asking all College staff to avoid the building until further notice.

We are in contact with leadership of the Nursery School and the Pennsylvania Department of Health to obtain as much information as possible. Based on our conversations, we believe the risk to the College community remains low.

We will share relevant updates as more information becomes available.
