Unless otherwise indicated, all Reunion events will be hosted on Zoom. Faculty Lecture: The Class Ceiling - Race, Class Origin, and Income Inequality

8-9 p.m. ET

A powerful 'class pay gap’ exists in Britain’s elite occupations. Even when those from working-class backgrounds make it into prestigious jobs, they earn, on average, 16% less than colleagues from privileged backgrounds. But why is this the case? Drawing on 175 interviews across four case studies – television, accountancy, architecture, and acting –  Daniel Laurison, assistant professor of Sociology, will explore the complex barriers facing the upwardly mobile.

Volvelles Workshop

7:30-8:30 p.m. ET

Volvelles, rotating paper wheel charts, were medieval cutting-edge information technology, the ‘original computers’ that allowed users to calculate dates, and positions of constellations. Join Pam Harris, associate College Librarian, and Susan Dreher, Exhibitions Librarian of the McCabe Library to learn more about the unique Astronomicum Caesareum book with its sublime volvelles, on display in McCabe, and make your own volvelle.
Supplies will be sent to you beforehand if you register by Friday April 23, or you can gather your own supplies using this list. Registration capacity is limited.

Memory Mapping Workshop

Join Swarthmore College Archivist, David Obermayer, to recount your favorite memories of special places on Swarthmore College Campus. Add your memories to an interactive Google map of campus along with historical photographs and partner with other alumni in building a memory map of Swarthmore College's history.

Baking Workshop

After a successful baking workshop as part of our fall 2020 virtual programming, Therese Ton ’19 will join us once more to explore the science of baking. Come bake with Therese and make her yummy brown sugar chocolate chip cookies.  
While a student at Swarthmore College, Therese started her own bakery, Toscah. During this workshop, Therese will demonstrate her baking skills and talk about her experience starting a business. Attendees are invited to bake along with Therese. A recipe with gluten free and vegan options will be provided after registration.

Sari Altschuler '01, associate professor of English, associate director of the Humanities Center, and founding director of the Health, Humanities, and Society minor and initiative at Northeastern University, will present “After the Outbreak: Narrative, Infrastructure”, which examines COVID-19 and considers what we might learn from people who lived with truly global pandemics of this sort in the past.

Andrea Packard, List Gallery Director, will introduce alum, artist, and cardiologist Nazanin Moghbeli '96 for a discussion of Nazanin's most recent work, the intersection of art and medicine, and how her Swarthmore education supported these endeavors. A downloadable catalog of Nazanin's work will accompany the exhibit.

We are offering our annual Barnes Foundation visit for the 50th reunion class in virtual format this year. The hour-long program features a 50-minute live tour with a Barnes docent followed by a Q&A. Using "deep zoom" technology, you will see paintings and objects much closer and with greater detail than is possible on-site—this is a whole new experience!

We’ve all had interesting and rewarding lives since graduation, building on our intense Swarthmore experience. But most of us didn’t cook at Swarthmore. Our senses of taste, touch and sight, even hearing—are all deeply involved in cooking and baking. So where have our life-journeys taken us since our college days, as found in some favorite dish?

Please contribute one recipe that seems to you expressive of some significant aspect of your post-Swarthmore life. It could be anything—the memory of a trip, a recipe brought into your family through marriage, a delicious discovery. Consider framing the recipe with the story that makes it so special to you. And photographs—of the dish, and the circumstances.

Faculty Lecture: American by Birth: The Story of Birthright Citizenship in the United States. Carol Nackenoff, Richter Professor of Political Science

American citizens are either born that way or made so by naturalization.  The United States has generally considered those born on U.S. soil as its citizens.  The 14th Amendment declared that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States,” extending this principle for former slaves and their heirs. Many constitutional scholars argue that US birthright citizenship is long settled, and that the landmark Supreme Court case, U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark (1898) confirmed this understanding.  However, there are those who have looked to reverse that protection and who read the Constitution differently.  Richter Professor Carol Nackenoff talked to us about birthrigh citizenship from the Wong Kim Ark case to more recent discussions.

Debby shared a reading from her new book of poems, Shake & Tremor, which grew directly out of work the dhe did in a Feminist Interpretation of Scripture seminar at Swarthmore College. Debby’s very contemporary book of poetry uses references to biblical stories in order to illuminate the difficulties and complications of relationships between men and women.
