Swarthmore is again among the top producers of U.S. Fulbright scholars—a recognition it’s held for more than 10 years—with nine recent alumni receiving the honor with the College’s backing.

This year, Nikhil Chopra ’18, Joseph DeBrine ’18, Mariah Everett ’18, Madeleine Feldman ’17, Liliana Frankel ’18, Griffin Kammerer ’18, Alice Liu ’18, Bridget Scott ’18, and Susan Whaley ’18 received grants through Swarthmore’s sponsorship, while a 10th alum, Pendle Marshall-Hallmark ’14, was honored as an “at-large” candidate. Three other students endorsed by the College were offered Fulbright grants, but declined in order to enroll in graduate school.

The Fulbright Students program is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries” and encourages collaboration in developing ideas and addressing international concerns. Fellowships are awarded to American students, young professionals, and artists through a national merit-based competition for study, research, internships, and/or service abroad.

“The Fulbright is a bridge-building program,” says Melissa Mandos, Swarthmore’s fellowships and prizes advisor, who guides the Fulbright application process. “It gives our graduating seniors and alums opportunities to develop professional and personal relationships with people abroad in ways that are positive, mutually beneficial, and enduring.”
