John Caskey

Professor of Economics

John Caskey

An expert on consumer finance and banking, Prof. Caskey most recently has focused on pawnshops, check-cashing operations, payday lending and financial firms that primarily serve lower-income people, which he discusses in his book Fringe Banking: Check-Cashing Outlets, Pawnshops, and the Poor. Pawnshops, he says, are "banks" for lower-income people who do not have access to mainstream lenders. Caskey has also done research on aspects of Philadelphia's economy and community development banks. Caskey, who received his Ph. D. from Stanford University in 1984, has been a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal, and at the Russell Sage Foundation.
