Halloween Party 2018

General Logistics:
The Halloween party begins on Saturday (10/27) at 10 p.m. and ends at 2:00 a.m.

  • Essie Maes is serving as a beer garden.
  • Upper Tarble is the dance area.
  • Game area in Essies is dry but you're able to mingle.
  • Paces is CLOSED except to staff, Public Safety, etc.

The Halloween after-party (sponsored by DART) will be held in Shane Lounge from 1:30 a.m.-2:30 a.m.

The Mary Lyons Halloween Party will begin at 8 p.m. and last until 12 a.m. The ML Halloween Party promises to be an exceptionally fantastic night of music, food, games, contests and Halloween spirit!! Highlights include pumpkin carving, candy apple making, cookie decorating, and costume contests (with prizes!) Hosted by the ML RAs and funded by the OSE, this is a substance free event open to the entire campus.

Essie Mae's will be closed on Saturday after 2:00 p.m. so that event staff can begin set up of that space. 

Costumes:
Please exercise sensitivity and basic human decency when selecting a costume. This includes avoiding cultural appropriation in your costume selection.  In addition you should avoid costumes that trivialize the practices, traditions or trauma of groups of people. If you are unclear about what this means, the Diversity Peer Advisors are a great resource to assist you to gain greater understanding.  

Note:  We reserve the right to deny entrance to a student who wears a costume that fall within the categories described above. Again, leave all coats and purses/bags at home.

Beer Garden/Alcohol Policy:
Essie Mae's will serve as a Beer Garden. You must be 21 years of age or over enter the beer garden.

The following rules must be observed in the Beer Garden:

  • Alcohol can ONLY be checked-in between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. on the day of the event.  If you miss your time to drop off alcohol, no late alcohol will be accepted.

  • You must present a valid student ID which identifies you as over 21 in order to register alcohol.

  • Each individual OVER the age of 21 will be allowed to check in either 1 750ml bottle of wine or up to 6 individual 12oz or smaller beers. Absolutely no hard alcohol will be accepted.

  • A Staff member will be responsible for handing out drinks 1 @ a time when the individuals come to collect.

  • 'Last call' will begin at 1:15 a.m. and the Beer Garden will close promptly at 1:30 a.m. any unopened alcohol will be kept and returned to the student the next business day. Unfinished open alcohol will be discarded.

  • After you check-in alcohol, it can only be consumed in the beer garden; it cannot be checked out or returned to the student to take out of the building until the next business day.

  • Anyone with alcohol in the Upper Tarble area will be asked to leave the event.

  • At any time, if an individual believes that someone should no longer be served, Public Safety and the Dean's Office will assess the situation and make a decision.

  • We cannot stress this enough, if you do not have a valid ID with age on it, you cannot register alcohol.

Absolutely no food or drink can be brought into the building. There will be plenty of water available at the event.

Check-In/How to get a wristband:
You can check into the event in Parrish. Anyone who wants to attend the party must get signed in, show id, get official wristband, drop off coats and/or bags, etc.

Wrist-banding will begin at 9 p.m. and continue throughout the party. You may check-in as early as 9 p.m. You only need to check-in once.

The party will NOT allow any kind of purse, bag, or coat. Even if it is part of a costume, it will NOT be allowed in the building. You will be given the opportunity to return items to your room OR use the unattended lounges in Parrish. No exceptions to the no coat/no bag/no liquid rule.

Once students complete the check-in process in Parrish, they may come and go as much as they like...no swiping at the door...only entry/re-entry requirement is wristband.  

Guest Policy:
Students WILL be able to bring one guest who is above 18. You MUST pre-register your guest; the guest limit is capped at 150--once we hit 150 guests, we will no longer be accepting registrations. No prospective students or visiting prospective athletes may attend, regardless of age. The registration form can be found online (fill it out asap, as it might fill up).

  • ALL guests, including students from other institutions, must have a valid ID that states their age, name, and has a picture on the ID.

  • Guests must show up to check-in with their host; the guest cannot check-in if the host is not present.

  • Remember: even TriCo and UPenn students must be pre-registered and are considered 'guests'.

  • Guests are not permitted to bring any bags into the event.

Please remember that you are responsible for the behavior of your guest.

The "AFTER-PARTY":
Beginning at 1:30 a.m., DART is hosting a dry after-party where students can get food, water, and hang out. Students waiting to take the ML shuttles are welcome to wait in Shane Lounge and eat!

Things that could ruin/negatively impact the night:

  • If you are worried about your friend, your friend is vomiting and/or unresponsive, find a SwatTeam member or call Public Safety. As a reminder, the number is 610-328-8333. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

  • If a College official, SwatTeam, DART Team, etc. asks for your student ID or your name, you must show it to them--please help the registration process go smoothly.

  • If you fail to register a guest, they will not be able to attend.

  • If you attempt to bring in hard alcohol to the event, and/or are found to have alcohol on the 2nd floor of Clothier, you may be asked to leave for the duration of the event.

  • Harassing behavior and/or behavior that violates college policy will not be tolerated.

  • Individuals who show up to the event overly intoxicated and/or we are concerned about their overall wellness, or exhibit behaviors that are not acceptable, will be denied entrance to the event.

The Wrap-Up:
Be mindful that a group of SwatTeam, OSE Interns, Public Safety Officers, and the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) staff will be mingling in and around the event and to ensure safety and fun for all Swarthmore students/guests attending and their guests.

Everyone is responsible to ensure a safe and respectful party space. "If you see something, say something," applies here -- if someone is having a difficult time or you witness behavior that violates school policy, please make contact with one of the groups above.

We recommend you travel/arrive/leave with at least one other person, and keep tabs on each other throughout the night. The shuttles will be running until 3am...use them!
