A Ballinglen Recollection, brings together diverse paintings and works on paper by 11 Swarthmore alumni who participated in the summer residency program at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in County Mayo, Ireland. The subjects of these works vary, from the Irish landscape to imagined figures and abstract compositions. A serene and meditative mood infuses many of the works and all of them demonstrate the stimulating and formative nature of working in a remarkable creative community.
The summer residency program at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation is a six-week immersive program which takes place in the town of Ballycastle, Country Mayo, Ireland. During the first two weeks, students, along with other visitors from around the world, attend plein-air painting workshops taught by artists Randall Exon and Jeff Reed. Students visit nearby locations and use the beautiful landscape of the northern Irish coast as inspiration for paintings that are often executed on-site. In the four weeks that follow, the students work independently, building upon their observational studies. The Ballinglen Arts Program began in 2013 and continued every summer until 2020, when the pandemic paused programming After a two-year hiatus, the program will resume this summer.
Ballinglen Recollection also offers alumni the opportunity to express heartfelt gratitude to Professor Randall Exon, who initiated the residency program; to Jeff Reed who has co-taught numerous painting master classses with Professor Exon and co-hosted Swarthmore students; to Ballinglen Co-founder Margo Dolan; to program administrator Una Forde—and many more. Through this exhibition, participating alumni and many others can celebrate Professor Exon's innovative teaching and dedication. We can also appreciate the friendship between Swarthmore, Ballinglen, and the growing and inter-related communities that they serve.
