2017-2018 Intern Team

Meet the 2017-2018 Intercultural Center Interns

Ryan Arazi

Hello!  My name is Ryan and I am a first-year student from Staten Island, NY. I am also the son of two immigrants who were born in Mexico and Argentina. I hope you visit me during my office hours to discuss anything and everything (in English or Spanish).

Office Hours: Thursdays, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Karen Avila

I'm incredibly excited to be working closely with the IC and its members to increase the IC's visibility and presence on campus. Currently, I am working towards applying for the Lang Opportunity Scholarship to create a project related to education and disconnected youth. I am an advocate of healthy habits (like drinking green tea every morning), enjoy meaningful conversation, and love to love. Talk to me anytime!

Office Hours: Mondays, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Mohammed Bappe

Hey Swarthmore, my name is Bappe and I'm from West Philadelphia. I am a Soc Anth and Peace Conflict Studies double major. The IC has played a central role in my life here, and if you need help with anything let me know! I also work in the Lang Center as the Identities and Inequality associate and can help get funding for summer opportunities.

Office Hours: Wednesdays, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Freddy Bernardino

Hey! My name is Freddy Bernardino and I'm a senior majoring in Education and Latin American Studies! I like working with issues regarding Queer Latinidad, HIV Education, First Gen students, and Low Income Students in Higher Ed. Come talk to me!

Office Hours: Sundays, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Faith Booker

Hello, hello, hello! My name is Faith Booker. I am a misplaced Ohioan and freshman at Swarthmore College, and I dream of a more equitable society. As a black woman, I consider myself an intersectional feminist. I enjoy learning about new ideas, having respectful debates, and watching Epic Rap Battles of History. Come talk to me about anything!

Office Hours: Fridays, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Paul Buchanan

I'm a bisexual triplet from the deep south, and I'm excited and passionate about the work I'll get to do at the IC, especially concerning mental health and intersectionality.

Office Hours: Sundays, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Sonya Chen

Hi everyone! I'm Sonya, a senior studying Political Science, Soc/Anth, and Statistics. I've been a part of the Swarthmore Asian Organization (SAO) since my freshman spring and am super excited to be a part of the IC team this year. I'm particularly interested in: coalition-building, representations of POC/marginalized groups in academia/literature, and connecting education to social change. If you ever want to chat/drink coffee, please feel free to reach out!

Office Hours: Tuesdays, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Mehra den Braven

A little bit about me: I'm a sophomore from Santa Clara, California with a not yet clear major. A lot of my time is spent playing volleyball (I'm on the team here at Swat), but besides being an athlete, I'm a lover of breakfast foods, anything punny, positive vibes, chais, and choreography videos on youtube (literally blow my mind every time). I'm really looking forward to hearing people's stories this year and building a strong community!

Office Hours: Wednesdays, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Shelby Dolch

I am a first-year student with intended majors of Political Science and Arabic. I hope to work within the fields of criminal justice reform, LBTQA+ rights, and women's rights (especially for women of color). Please stop by and talk to me about any of those things or just to talk about how amazing the tv show The West Wing is.

Office Hours: Tuesdays, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Dakota Gibbs

Hello Fam, I’m Dakota Gibbs. Hailing from the great state of New Jersey, I’m proud to say that I am from Orange, NJ, but really I’m from Newark. Other than being an IC intern, I’m a member of Multi, RA of ML2nd, Phi Psi, Ninjagrams, Swing Dance Club, Moderator of the Swarthmore Memes for Quaker Teens group, the Jazz Ensemble, and my own band: Caboose. A huge part of my life is my Multi Identity, where I can celebrate, process, and navigate the intersectionalities of my mix heritage. It’s this passion of culture, learning, and acceptance, through my own struggles and triumphs in navigating my identities, that I plan to bring to IC and its IC affiliated groups- and a “few” good and witting puns here and there.

Office Hours: Fridays, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Taty Hernández

Hey, I'm Taty Hernández (she/her/hers)! I'm a Zapotec xingona from Los Angeles, double majoring in Studio Art and Biology. I like to do all things crafty! Issues I care about are identity, representation, and the dismantling of the prison-industrial system.

Office Hours: Tuesdays, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Cindy Lopez

Hi!  My name is Cindy and I am in the class of 2020. I use she/her/they/them pronouns and I am majoring in Peace and Conflict Studies with double minors in Arabic and Latin American Studies.  I have experience in planning events and facilitating discussions. I love meeting new people and learning about different experiences and ideas. Let me know how I can help!

Office Hours: Wednesdays, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Leslie Moreaux

I'm a sophomore and an intern at the Intercultural Center. I work closely with the Assistant Director of the Intercultural Center (IC) to imagine and implement programs, initiatives and strategies for Swatties. This year I will focus on the IC newsletter and the IC Arthouse.

Office Hours: Thursdays, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Barbara Pham

I am from Orange County, California. I love yeast, social justice, and poorly timed dad jokes in no particular order. I joined the IC Team because I wanted to do my part in supporting campus diversity and equity, particularly for low income students and queer women of color.

Office Hours: Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Jasmine Rashid

I'm a senior from New York majoring in Peace and Conflict Studies, and I've worked at the IC since my sophomore year. Ask me about contributing to the IC's arts & culture publication VISIBILITY Magazine, event planning and strategy, multimedia journalism, Women of Color Kick Ass (WOCKA), the Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility, community-based learning classes, and other opportunities to help make your time at Swarthmore not-sucky. :)

Office Hours: Mondays, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Janelle Pichardo Reyes

Hi! I'm a Dominican-American woman with a passion for both people and music! I am a singer who loves to sing music that I feel has soul, like R&B or jazz. I believe that the arts are an incredible medium through which to unify communities. To foster that sense of connection and understanding between us all, I'll be helping to organize events centered around the arts here in the IC.

Office Hours: Mondays, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Twan Sia

I am a freshman here at Swarthmore College. As an immigrant from Myanmar, I am interested in working with the Southeast Asian and Asian American communities as well as other groups. While working on the IC team, I hope to be able to help foster an inclusive and welcoming space here at Swarthmore for all groups of people.

Office Hours: Sundays, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Zain Talukdar

I’m Zain, and I’m a junior! I’m currently Pre-Med with an Arabic major and a Peace and Conflict Studies Minor. I’m also a  low-income, Pakistani/Bengali-American Muslim, and the eldest sibling of five, so I have a lot to talk about!

Office Hours: Fridays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Robby Jimenez Vargas

Hey!  My name is Robby and I am a senior from Norwalk, CT, pursuing a special major in Psychology & Educational Studies. In addition to being an IC Intern, I am also involved in ENLACE, NuWave, and the Title IX Office.  I look forward to working with you!

Office Hours: Thursdays, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Gene Witkowski

Bonjour! My name’s Gene, and I’m excited to be one of the interns at the Intercultural Center this year! Music has always been a passion of mine – I wrote my first song when I was six and I’ve been writing ever since. Regardless of what I do, I know I won’t be happy unless I’m helping somebody; music helped me and I’d like to believe each song I’ve written could do the same for someone else. It’s played an integral role in my life, but there’s much more to me: I love to do math, and could talk for hours on end about art history or the meaning of life. I consider listening to be one of my greatest strengths, so if you ever need someone to talk to, don’t hesitate to reach out to me – whether you wanna arrange a song or work through a math problem set, I’ll always have an ear.

Office Hours: Tuesdays, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Jessica Xu

My name is Jessica.  I am a junior majoring in Education and Political Science. I am also an international student from Shanghai, China and went to a high school in the middle of nowhere in Connecticut. As an IC intern, I look forward to fostering conversations and collaborations among our diverse cultural and identity groups and having lots of fun. Come talk to me in the IC!

Office Hours: Mondays, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
