Department Overview

In May of 2012, Swarthmore College was awarded a four-year, $1 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for undergraduate science education. Swarthmore was designated a Capstone awardee, which recognizes the College for their sustained excellence and important contributions to undergraduate science education. Previous awards include: $1.6 in 2008, $1.5 million in 2004, $700,000 in 2000, $1.2 million in 1996, $650,000 in 1993 and $900,000 in 1988 for combined funding of $6.55 million.  The Hughes-funded programs at Swarthmore are overseen by the Howard Hughes Steering Committee.
