Recruitment Assistance

I. Faculty Positions

For the sake of furthering Swarthmore College's community and educational values, the faculty endorses that all Departments and Programs of the College, with the help of the Administration, take necessary and appropriate steps so that within a decade we may see a significant increase in the racial and ethnic diversity of the faculty in tenure-track positions well distributed in all three Divisions of the College (Faculty action, 6 February, 1998).

The equal opportunity officer is available to support the faculty recruitment function of academic departments by providing additional assistance, when requested, in identifying diverse recruitment pools for specific searches; and counseling search committees and department chairs about avoiding discriminatory recruitment practices.

The EOO also acquires directories of  diverse professional organizations and individuals.

Equal Opportunity Considerations in Faculty Hiring

II. Staff Positions

The equal opportunity officer supports the staff recruitment function of the Human Resources office by providing additional assistance, when needed, in identifying diverse recruitment pools for specific searches; and counseling search committees and hiring managers about avoiding discriminatory recruitment practices.

III. Search Committees, generally

It is central to the mission of the college to seek exceptional applicants who can demonstrate their commitment to an inclusive society and world. It is also critical to remember that it is inappropriate and in most cases illegal to discriminate against an applicant on the basis of their sex, race, color, age, religion, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status, medical condition, pregnancy, disability or any other legally protected status.

The equal opportunity officer is available to meet with search committees to discuss enhancing diversity recruitment efforts and avoiding discriminatory practices in:

  • Position Announcements and Advertisements
  • In-person and Telephone Interview Discussions and Conversation
  • Interview Questions
  • Reference Checking
  • Documentation and Notes
