Anthropological Perspectives on Conservation

Christy Schuetz

Christy Schuetze, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, pictured on a visit to her field site in Gorongosa, in central Mozambique.  In this photo she is  sharing a copy of her dissertation with the family of one of her primary informants-- a spirit medium with whom she has been working since 2001.  Professor Schuetze's research on Gorongosa Mountain has coincided with the expansion of the nearby Gorongosa National Park to incorporate lands on the mountain for the first time. The land conflict that emerged inspired her course "Anthropological Perspectives on Conservation" (offered Spring 2016), which highlights cultural aspects of conservation and the complicated human stories linked to the creation of national parks.
