Dare 2 Soar tutors volunteer at several different tutoring sites or programs. Each site is unique, and as such we are able to better serve not only the community's needs, but also the interests and schedules of our tutors. The following is a brief overview of each of the sites we work with in Chester, as well as a summary of the Saturday Program that takes place on the Swarthmore College campus.
Chester East Side Ministries
CESM is located on the east side of Chester, and offers a wide variety of services to the community, including GED classes, food pantries, a summer camp, and its after school tutoring program. CESM's after school program is the largest tutoring site, serving students ages 6-13. CESM welcomes tutors from Swarthmore College, Widener University, and Chester High School. Dare 2 Soar sends tutors to CESM on Mondays and Tuesdays, 4:15-5:30.
Thomas M. Thomas Church
TMT is located on the West side of Chester. TMT provides an after-school program on Mondays-Thursdays, 4:15-5:30. TMT serves a variety of age ranges, from kindergarten up to high school aged students, and seeks to promote reading skills and a love of education. Tutors at TMT are also able to engage with a wider age range of students, as well as to establish closer relationships with small, regular groups of tutees.
God's House of Glory Haven of Peace Church
GHG is a small, non-denominational church on the East side of Chester. Aside from it's tutoring program, GHG also operates several other assistance programs for the community, including a food bank. GHG manages the smallest after-school program that Dare 2 Soar currently works with, serving students ages 6-13 on Mondays-Thursdays, 4:15-6.
Community Action Agency of Delaware County (CAADC)
CAADC is the major social services provider within Delaware County, assisting residents of the area to foster and increase economic independence. Some of the services CAADC offers include job training and assistance, as well as housing assistance. CAADC is a unique program to Dare 2 Soar, as our tutors serve kids coming from two homeless shelters operated by CAADC. Attendance by students often varies due to the nature of the program, but Dare 2 Soar strives to provide consistent tutors Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4:10-5:30 to be available for homework support.
Smedley High School & Chester High School
The two high school sites operate in partnership with a grant provided by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program, which is a Congressionally funded program aiming to provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. Dare 2 Soar provides tutors Monday-Thursday from 4-6 to after-school enrichment programs at both Smedley and Chester high schools.
J. Lewis Crozer Library
Located in the West End, Crozer Library is the only library in Chester. The library serves as an educational center, offering not just the typical services but also numerous programs, services, and activities for Chester residents. Dare 2 Soar tutors offer homework help and educational activities each Tuesday and Thursday, from 4:15-6:15. Tutors at Crozer serve a bigger time commitment, as they are expected to go on both Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Saturday Program facilitates elementary school students to come and spend Saturdays from 9:00am to 2:00pm on campus, participating in educational and curricular activities. This program is more mentoring-focused, as Dare 2 Soar tutors spend more time with the students and build true one-on-one relationships.
