Fall 2021 - COVID-19 Paid Leave Policy

Swarthmore College is committed to continuing pay for employees who have tested positive for COVID-19 or who, while performing their job responsibilities, are considered a close contact to someone at the College who has tested positive for COVID-19. The guidelines for the College’s COVID-19 Paid Leave Policy are outlined below.

Eligibility: This policy applies to all faculty and staff members, including part-time, temporary, and casual staff.

Effective Dates: This policy is effective Sept. 6, 2021 and remains in effect until further notice. The College may modify this policy at any time based on current guidelines and conditions surrounding COVID-19.

Employees who test positive for COVID-19, or who, while performing their job responsibilities, are identified as a close contact to someone at the College who has tested positive for COVID-19 are eligible for up to 10 days of COVID-19 leave time. If you are asymptomatic and you are able to work remotely, you must do so before accessing COVID-19 leave time. Please coordinate with your supervisor.

If you are exposed to COVID-19 outside of the College, and, as a result, must quarantine, you must use your sick and/or vacation time.

An employee must not report to work on campus if they are feeling sick; have received a positive test result; are awaiting test results while symptomatic; or are experiencing symptoms potentially related to COVID-19. Please refer to the College’s quarantine and isolation policy for additional details. Any employee who is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 should immediately consult with their health care provider and make arrangements to take a COVID-19 test and take precautionary measures as directed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

An employee who cannot report to work because they are sick or symptomatic should notify their supervisor of the absence as they normally would; employees are not required to tell their supervisor any medical diagnosis. If an employee tests positive for COVID-19, or if they are exposed to COVID-19 or identified as a close contact of someone who has tested positive, they are required to immediately notify the COVID-19 Employee Test Team (CETT) at and Terri Maguire in Human Resources at

The following chart is intended to provide guidance for employee pay/leave questions when an employee is impacted by a particular scenario listed.  Questions about this chart should be directed to Human Resources:

EMPLOYEE scenario

Paid Administrative Leave (up to 10 days)

Vacation Time

Sick Time

Family and Medical Leave (FMLA), if applicable

Employee tests positive for COVID-19

Quarantine mandated by a public health agency or by Swarthmore College due to close contact at work to someone who has tested positive; employee is symptomatic or unable to work remotely

Quarantine mandated by a public health agency or by Swarthmore College due to exposure outside of the workplace

To Care for a family member who is ill (COVID-19)

Employees placed on paid leave will not be required to use accruals (sick or vacation time). If an employee is not a full-time employee, pay continuity for a period of up to 10 calendar days will be based on regular work hours. If the period of quarantine or isolation continues beyond 10 calendar days, or if an employee’s health condition prevents them from returning to work, the employee will likely be required to use their own sick or vacation time; employees should consult with Human Resources if they have any questions. The supervisor will be notified of the employee’s status as appropriate, to ensure they are able to arrange adequate coverage.
