Ghana Trip Information
Trip scheduled for January, 2008
Announcement: a limited number of flights are available through the BCC. The deadline to reserve a seat is June 19th.
The Black Cultural Center will sponsor its bi-annual trip to Ghana, West Africa, in January of 2008. Due to overwhelming requests this trip will be open to a number of new constituents: all members of the Swarthmore College Community (students, staff and faculty), Swarthmore Alumni and members of the Tri-College Community (Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges).
We will depart for Ghana on or around the 2nd or 3rd of January and will return some 12 days later. Our travels will take us around the lower half of the country, including Accra - The Capital, Tema - The Industrial City, The Volta Region - with the largest man made lake on the continent, Kumasi - the seat of the Ashanti Kingdom, and to Elmina and Cape Coast- the location of the Enslaved Castles. We will also visit the Gold mines, two Universities, canopy walk in a tropical rainforest, see the place where Ghana proclaimed its independence and visit Kwame Nkrumah's crypt. And of course we will do some shopping at Open Air Market, the Cultural Arts Center, the Carving and Kente Weaving Villages, and take in some of Ghana's delectable cuisine.
The trip will have a limited number of attendees, and as you might expect we must afford students the greatest opportunity for attendance. Very shortly the trip organizers will begin to place information, detailing cost, travel dates, meetings and other considerations on this website. Please check back soon for the latest information.
