Objective

The purpose of this investigation is to test the teratogenic effects of pentavalent arsenic, in the form of sodium arsenate, on the development of zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. Embryos will be incubated in varying concentrations of arsenic (V) and observed periodically to determine what, if any, are the morphological defects present in arsenic-treated embryos. We will first attempt to establish an effective range of arsenic concentration on zebrafish embryo development. Based on previous experimental evidence concerning the teratogenic and toxic effects of arsenic, we will focus the second part of the investigation on observing neural tube malformation and embryo mortality.
