How do I write an interesting introduction?

Return to Student Resources

Great question!

Writing a brilliant introduction during the initial stages of your writing process is very challenging, in part because you are usually not sure of what your paper is going to end up saying. So, start with a very basic introduction that identifies and clearly defines the focus of your paper. Use your introduction to give yourself a road-map for the rest of your writing and work on creating a clear thesis to help you as you proceed.

After you have written the rest of your paper, go back to your introduction and revise it to anticipate the final points you make in your conclusion. After that, you can dress up your thoughts with some creative style by following some of the intro suggestions MIT discusses.

Whatever you do, remember that the best introduction includes a clearly defined and personally compelling claim.
