Orientation - Tuesday, Aug. 27
9 a.m.-noon Arrival (Residence Halls) and Check-In (Shane Lounge, Parrish Hall)
Keys can be picked up, and move-in assistance is available at each residence hall from 9 a.m.-noon. After moving into dorm rooms, students should report to Shane Lounge to pick up orientation packets. This packet should include the student's photo I.D.; if it does not, the student should report to the Benjamin West House (Public Safety) by noon to have an I.D. made.
From noon-5 p.m., keys and orientation packets will be available in Parrish East 108.
After 5 p.m. these materials will be available at the Benjamin West House.
9 a.m.-2 p.m. Family Welcome Lounge (Parrish Parlors West) Meet members of the Parents Council,and pick up a welcome bag.
11 a.m.-noon Student Spaces Meet and Greet (Black Cultural Center, Intercultural Center, and theWellness Lounge) Drop by to learn about the resources available to students in these spaces.
11 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Boxed Lunch (Sharples Patio) Lunch is free for students with their College I.D.Two complimentary lunch tickets for family members are included in the student's orientation packet. Additional guests may purchase lunch for $6.
1-1:30 p.m. Meeting for Students with Special Needs (Kohlberg 115) Students with disabilities who anticipate requesting accommodations should take advantage of this opportunity to learn about available resources and support from the coordinator of student disability services.
2-3 p.m. First Meeting for All New Students (Lang Concert Hall) President Rebecca Chopp, Dean of Admissions Jim Bock '90, and Dean of Students Liz Braun will welcome the members of the Class of 2017 and transfer students to Swarthmore.
2-3 p.m. Family Q&A with Returning Students (Lang Performing Arts Center-LPAC) Returning Swarthmore students will discuss their college experience to date and answer questions from the families of new students in this session moderated by First-Year Dean Karen Henry '87.
3-4:15 p.m. Welcome to Families (LPAC) President RebeccaChopp, Dean of Students Liz Braun, and Provost Tom Stephenson welcome family members to the Swarthmore Community.
3-4:30 p.m. MARACAS Group Meetings (Lang ConcertHall) Students will meet up with their MARACAS groups to kick off the orientation experience. MARACAS are the Campus Advisers (CAs), Resident Advisers (RAs), and Student Academic Mentors (SAMs) who collectively support students in their transition to life at Swarthmore.
4:15-5 p.m. President's Tea (LPAC lobby) Families are invited to meet President Rebecca Chopp and other members of the administration and faculty at this informal reception.
5-5:30 p.m. Family Farewells (LPAC lobby) The time has come to say goodbye; this event marks the end of the parent and family portion of orientation.
5-5:30 p.m. Postcard Parlor Party (Shane Lounge, Parrish Hall) If you've already said goodbye to your family before today, stop by and send them a postcard tolet them know you're thinking of them.
5:30-6:30 p.m. MARACAS Dinner (Sharples Dining Hall) Students will meet with their MARACAS group for dinner. CAs will set a meeting time and place for your first dinner at Swarthmore.
7:30-9 p.m. Dorm Hall Meeting (dorm lounges) Meet your RA and hall mates to kick off your year of living together.
9-11 p.m. Taste of Philly Dorm Gatherings (dorm lounges) Get to know the other residents in your dorm while enjoying some of Philly's famous foods.
