Summer Housing Lotteries
Preference Lottery - April 10, 2013 in Science Center 101 at 7:00 p.m. bring the form you will download from the link below signed by the appropriate faculty or staff member.
To qualify for the preference lottery, you must:
- Be doing paid research with a Swarthmore Faculty member this summer OR
- Be working on a project sponsored by the Swarthmore Foundation Summer Lang Grant, or working for a Swarthmore Office OR
- Be an international student on financial aid with a non-residence visa AND
- Have a zero balance on your Swarthmore student account (will be verified).
April 10, 2013 following the preference lottery at approximately 8:00 PM.
- All remaining rooms, if any, will be available at the general lottery after the preference lottery. If no rooms remain the lottery will be cancelled. Applicants must have a zero balance on their Swarthmore student account. Please download the application form below and bring it to the lottery. Please read the application carefully.
The lotteries are random - and not at all scientific - you will choose a number when you arrive and we will pick numbers at random for choosing rooms. If you have a roommate, the individual with the best number can choose for both people.
You must go online to a web site (to be provided at the lottery) within 24-hours of the lottery to pay your NON-REFUNDABLE $75 deposit by credit card or bring a check made payable to Swarthmore College or cash to the lottery. If your deposit is not received online within 24-hours of the lottery, your room request will be cancelled.
Summer housing payments are due in two installments on June 21, 2013 and July 19, 2013. A late-fee of $5.00 per day will be charged. You will be able to make payments online by credit card at a web site to be provided. Arrangements can be made to pay by check or cash. If you have a problem with your payment, contact Tricia Maloney to discuss. You will not be permitted to remain in your room if no payment is received by June 21, 2013. Any remaining payments will be applied to your College account and will have to be paid before graduation.
If you don't go online to make your deposit within 24 hours of the lottery, we will assume you no longer want the room and the contract will be cancelled. If you cancel in writing (firstname.lastname@example.org) by noon on April 24, 2013, the room will be cancelled, but your deposit will not be refunded. If the contract is cancelled after noon on April 24 but before the move-in date, the student is responsible for $375.00 (half the payment). If a room is cancelled after the move-in date, the student is responsible for the entire rent of $750.00.
If you are currently studying abroad, you can ask a friend to serve as your proxy. That friend must bring your signed application (for priority lottery) and you must pay your deposit by credit card within 24-hours to hold the room.
The dining hall can (not required) provide meals for summer programs on campus and students are permitted to purchase meals using a pre-paid card for discount meals in the dining hall or for regular priced items at Essie Mays. Note: summer fare is limited and vegan options are not available.
Summer Campus Services
Many offices at the College have reduced services, schedules, and staffing over the summer. For more information on health services over the summer, please see the Health Center's website.
All students must leave summer housing in Mary Lyon on August 10, 2013 by noon. Students must make their own off-campus living arrangements before the residence halls open for the fall semester (Friday, August 30th) - no exceptions. You cannot store your belongings in your fall dorm storage area after the summer. If you are an approved early return, there is no housing available between August 10th and your early return date.
No storage is available either before moving into or after moving out of summer housing. You may not be able to access secure storage. Summer housing requires students to plan ahead of time and pack lightly. Please plan accordingly!
