All enrolled students must have health insurance.
Each year students are required to update their health insurance information. The Dean's office will send a request to students every spring, requiring all students to indicate their intention to decline or enroll in the student health plan. Students who decline the student health plan must provide proof of insurance by entering their health insurance information in their mySwarthmore or returning the Annual Mandatory Insurance Enrollment Form [PDF] to Student Health and Wellness Service. Parents can update a students health insurance information on-line by logging into their E-bill account and selecting the "Health Insurance" tab.
In order to waive coverage, your current plan should meet the following requirements:
- Be effective through the end of the spring semester
- Provide for local emergency and urgent care
- Cover local hospital admissions
- Provide health coverage while studying abroad
If the student's health insurance information is not received by June 15th, the insurance premium will be placed on the July tuition bill and the student will be enrolled in the college student health plan by default.
Any medical services provided outside of Student Health and Wellness Service are billed directly to the student's insurance company by that medical provider. For example, emergency room care, hospital services, radiology services, and medical specialists will be billed directly to the student's health insurance provider.
It is the responsibility of the insured student to contact their insurance provider for pre-certifications and/or referrals as needed. The Student Health and Wellness Service does not directly bill medical insurance plans. Any labs done at the SHWS will be billed to the student's insurance by Quest Diagnostics or Labcorp. It is the responsibility of the insured person to understand and request information from their insurance company regarding covered services.
