BALTIMORE, Md. - Junior forward Kim Cariello (Hudson, OH/Western Reserve Academy) tallied the game-winning goal, her 12th of the season, and added one assist to lead the Garnet to a 2-0 victory over Washington College in game two of the Centennial Conference Championships semifinals. No. 2 seeded Swarthmore claimed its third straight victory to improve to 14-5 overall, while #3 seed Washington evened its mark at 9-9.
Cariello posted the goal off a breakaway with 7:49 remaining in the first period to give SC a 1-0 halftime advantage. Sophomore Meg Woodworth (Lexington, MA/Middlesex) recorded the insurance goal for Swarthmore with a blast at the 2:22 mark of the second half. Cariello assisted on the goal with a cross-pass to Woodworth who was positioned in front of the WC goal.
Washington's Missy Tine (Fr., Chestertown, MD/Kent County) had an opportunity to put points on the board for the Shorewomen after earning a penalty stroke with1:26 remaining in the contest. But Swarthmore goalkeeper Kate Nelson-Lee (So., Jamestown, RI/Wheeler) guessed correctly and deflected Tine's goal attempt to preserve the shutout.
Nelson-Lee recorded four saves for Swarthmore to earn the win. Washington goalie Toby Wilmet (Sr., Dalton, PA/Lackawanna Trail) also had three saves and allowed two goals. The Garnet outshot the Shorewomen, 8-6, but WC held a 6-5 penalty corner margin.
In semifinal No. 1 Johns Hopkins senior forward Amy Bruschi (Princeton Jct., NJ/W.Windsor-Plainsboro) scored one goal and added one assist and senior goalie Katie Reytar (Laurel, MD/Hammond) posted her ninth shutout of the season as host Johns Hopkins knocked off Muhlenberg, 2-0 in game one of the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Field Hockey Championships Friday afternoon at Homewood Field. The win is the 14th straight for the top-seeded Blue Jays, who improve to 16-4 overall and advance to Saturday's 5:00 p.m. championship game. Muhlenberg falls to 9-9 with the loss.
Bruschi provided all the scoring the Blue Jays would need when she netted her 10th goal of the season just 1:48 into the game off an assist from freshman defender Kelly Hewitt (Oreland, PA/Springfield Township). Hewitt sent Bruschi in on a partial breakaway and she beat Mule goalie Josephine Fasolino (Mamaroneck, NY/Rye Neck) for the game's first goal. Bruschi added an assist on Hopkins' second goal at the 18:11 mark when she fed senior midfielder Lauren Carney (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) off a corner and Carney ripped a shot inside the near post for her 10th goal of the season.
Reytar made just two saves in picking up her fourth consecutive shutout. Hopkins held an 18-9 advantage in shots and a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners. Fasolino made 11 saves in goal for the Mules, who entered the tournament as the number four seed and had fallen just 4-3 to Hopkins during the regular season.
