Faculty News: Gwynn Kessler to Join Religion Department

In the Fall of 2009 Gwynn Kessler, currently Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies, Rabbinic Literature, and Gender Studies at the University of Florida, Gainsville, will join the faculty in the Department of Religion at Swarthmore College as Assistant Professor of Religion and Jewish Studies.

Gwynn's first book, Conceiving Israel: The Fetus in Rabbinic Narratives will appear this year ( University of Pennsylvania Press). Gwynn's current research uses feminist and queer theories to interpret (and critique) rabbinic constructions of gender and the body. In addition to teaching courses on rabbinic literature, gender and the Hebrew Bible, and introduction to Judaisms, she will teach courses for us on GLBTQ Jews and Judaism and a seminar on biblical and rabbinic constructions of God's gender, with a focus on Genesis. See department profile for Gwynn's background, teaching and research interests.
