Jason Rivera joined Swarthmore College on July 1, 2016 as the new dean of the sophomore class and director of the Intercultural Center (IC). Prior to his arrival, Rivera was the director of Achieving the Promise Initiatives and collegewide director of Learning Centers at Montgomery College. In his former position, he played a central role in directing efforts to close the achievement gap, including developing a comprehensive vision for the Achieving the Promise Academy, creating programming for students, sparking connections between faculty members, conducting assessments, and fostering college-wide collaborations. In addition to his work at Montgomery College, he previously served as the assistant director of the Office of Multi Ethnic Student Education at the University of Maryland-College Park.
Rivera earned a B.A. in history and political science from Manhattanville College, a M.S.Ed in elementary education from the College of Staten Island, and a Ph.D. in teaching and learning, policy leadership with a concentration on minority and urban education from the University of Maryland. His dissertation was titled Mi Lugar Es Aquí (My Place is Here): Latino Male Voices and the Factors Contributing to their Academic Success in College.
