High School: Bronx High School of Science
Intended Major: Economics
Possible Career: Law, Politics

Prior to his freshman year, Richard was Program Coordinator of the Chinatown Youth Initiatives (CYI), a community-based youth-oriented 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. Richard spearheaded several large-scale community service events and coordinated a team of volunteers to provide a series of educational workshops for NYC youth, as well as free ESL language tutoring services to local immigrants.

Richard's early passion for politics was evident in high school extracurricular activities: he was a nationally-ranked debater(and co-captain of the team) and served as the section editor of the school newspaper. Richard continued these passions in his freshman year at Swarthmore as a writer for The Phoenix, Swarthmore's campus newspaper, and during the following summer as an intern for a NYC Councilman's campaign.

During the summer of 2006, Richard used his Evans funds to participate in Princeton in Beijing, an intensive language immersion program. He traveled through southern China upon completion of summer coursework. In the summer of 2007, Richard pursued a new found passion in economics as a Research Analyst at TGS Financial, a small wealth management firm. Richard attributes his love for economics mainly to Swarthmore's Honors Program, which he describes as "one of the most challenging, yet thoroughly rewarding learning experiences of [his] life." Richard served as Teaching Assistant for the Economics Department and graduated in May 2008 with High Honors. He is considering a joint JD/MBA program after a few years of professional experience in the investment banking sector.
