Swarthmore College Chosen to Host Proposed Presidential Debate

Swarthmore College has been chosen to host a proposed 2004 general election presidential debate sponsored by the Citizens' Debate Commission. If the current candidates accept the proposed debate schedule, Swarthmore's event will take place on Sept. 28. The college is one of six debate sites announced by the nonpartisan commission this week.

"Swarthmore is excited to be part of an effort to broaden the educational impact of the presidential debates," says Vice President for College and Community Relations Maurice Eldridge. "We're pleased that the commission has chosen Swarthmore as an appropriate site based on our academic reputation and our commitment to free and open discussion of ideas and issues."

The Citizens' Debate Commission is committed to hosting general election presidential debates that maximize voter education. It is comprised of more than a dozen national civic leaders from the left, center, and right of the political spectrum and 59 civic organizations serve on its advisory board.
