Six Swarthmore College seniors are winners of Fulbright Fellowships for 2004. Rebecca Ennen of Cambridge, Mass., will use hers to study in Sri Lanka, Jonathan Konits of Owings Mills, Md., will travel to Germany, Timothy Lang of Scarborough, Ont., will travel to Poland, Matthew Miller of Plum, Pa., will study in Iceland, Bryn Rosenfeld of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., will study in Russia, and Matthew Williams of Worthington, Ohio, will travel to China.

Rebecca Ennen, a theater major with a minor in educational studies, is the daughter of Ruth Ellen Goodman and Thomas Ennen and a 2000 graduate of the Commonwealth School in Boston. At Swarthmore, she has served on Drama Board and written for The Phoenix, the College's weekly student newspaper. After her year in Sri Lanka, Ennen hopes to pursue a career in theater and to work on developing multicultural drama curricula.

Jonathan Konits, a philosophy major with a minor in German studies, will use the award to travel to Berlin, Germany, to study contemporary Israel criticism, specifically the connection made between Zionism and fascism.

Konits is the son of Cindy and Philip Konits and a 2000 graduate of the Park School. He also attended the McDonogh School.

Timothy Lang, a double major in engineering and religion, will use the award to study the implementation of environmental policies in Poland, with special attention paid to the new European Union policies the country will have to adopt.

Lang is the son of Diane and Daniel Lang and a 2000 graduate of Sir Wilfrid Laurier CI in Scarborough. At Swarthmore, Lang played football, rugby, and badminton. He also worked on engineering research and student activities, including as social coordinator for the International Club. Lang's junior year experiences in the environmental science portion of Swarthmore's study abroad program in Krakow, Poland, was the driving force behind his desire to return to study with faculty he had met there.

After returning from Poland, Lang is considering attending graduate school to further study decision making in environmental systems. "I am also eager to get experience working on projects and solving real problems," he says.

Matthew Miller, an astronomy major with a minor in history, will use the award to study geophysics and astronomy in Iceland.

Miller is the son of Margaret and Donald Miller and a 2000 graduate of Plum Senior High School. At Swarthmore, he has been involved as a physics teaching assistant, a peer counselor, and an astronomy research assistant. "I also enjoy challenging my friends to a game of squash," he says.

After returning from Iceland, Miller hopes to pursue graduate work in physics and astronomy, with a particular focus on planet formation theory and stellar evolution theory.

Bryn Rosenfeld, a comparative literature major with a minor in interpretation theory, will use the award to travel to Russia to study the impact of the Spanish civil war on Soviet literature.

Rosenfeld, the daughter of Janelle McCammon and Raymond Rosenfeld, is a 2000 graduate of Seaholm High School in Birmingham, Mich. At Swarthmore, she played volleyball for three years, serving as captain her junior year. She was also the recipient of a grant from the College to study in Spain the summer after her sophomore year and of a government grant for a year of study in Russia after her junior year.

Matthew E. Williams, an honors political science major with a minor in Asian studies, will use the award to travel to China to study the country's legal system and how it relates to the different strata of Chinese society.

Williams, the son of Karen and Jeffrey Williams, is a 2000 graduate of Thomas Worthington High School. At Swarthmore, he was president of his class and was a four-year member of the track team. For his sportsmanship and service to the community, the athletic department awarded him the Kwink Trophy. Williams also received the James Geosork leadership award from the track team.

Administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, the Fulbright Scholar Program awards full research fellowships to graduating seniors after an extensive application process. Recipients receive free housing and a stipend to cover living expenses.
