Movie and Music Genre Classification Based On Representative Images
Our system identifies trends of colors in images and uses them to classify images into different emotive categories. We based our system on the psychology research that shows colors affect human emotions. We assumed that images conveying similar emotions would show similar trends of colors.
Movie genres are typically related to certain emotions and this emotion is partially expressed by the color characteristics of the movie poster. By using sample posters, our system learns the models for each genre and classifies test images into these genres. With six genres, we get about 41 percent correct classification since some genres aren't distinct and display multiple emotions (is The Incredibles a comedy or a children's movie?). With more distinct genres like children's movies and horror movies, we get about 87 percent correct classification.
