What Video Games Can Teach Music Classifiers and Vice Versa

I am working towards a program that will retrieve music that is keyed to a certain common use. For instance, someone might play music to relax, or to help them concentrate on work.

One way to approach this problem is to look at music that was created specifically for a particular purpose: video game soundtracks. These surprisingly elaborate musical pieces are keyed to specific events within the game world, which result in specific behaviors and reactions within the player. Training a system to extract musical features from these songs, and correctly identify their associated reactions from these features, can be of great use when creating a musical classifier. To this end, I have designed a computer system that can automatically classify video game music that is associated with dangerous scenes vs. neutral/safe scenes.
