1983 Sixteen Feet Sixteen Feet, the college's oldest a cappella group, recorded its first album, "In the Still of the Night," on April 22, 1983. According to the liner notes, Carl Moor, a member of the Class of 1983, convinced his roommate and fellow classmate Kurt Eichenwald to form the group two years earlier. At first, they thought they should be known as the No Talent Bums, so if they failed they could claim they had never been serious in the first place. After enlisting talented singers more confident of their success, they decided they needed a name change. The notes continue: "After names such as The Swarthtone (too corny) and Quaker Notes (already taken) were rejected, John [Fischer, Class of 1981], recognizing that all members of the group were bipedal, arrived at the name of Sixteen Feet." Several years and recordings later, the group's success continues unabated. Since 2000, Sixteen Feet has performed at Rockefeller Center, released its Christmas disc "MistleToe," and held its 20th alumni reunion. |
