Professor Paley is an organic chemist with special expertise in modern synthetic organic chemistry. His research group at Swarthmore has been involved in exploring the chemistry of organometallic compounds possessing planar and/or axial chirality. Initial efforts were focused on the synthesis of enantiomerically pure sulfinyl diene iron(0) tricarbonyl complexes. More recently his laboratory has been preparing atropisomeric vinyl stannanes as a route towards making non-biaryl atropisomeric ligands.

Professor Paley has published numerous articles in journals including Chemical Reviews, Organometallics, Organic Letters, Journal of Organic Chemistry, and Tetrahedron Letters.

He received a B.S. from McGill University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
