Professor of Educational Studies
Professor Smulyan does qualitative research examining the intersection of teachers' and administrators' personal and professional lives within particular institutional and social contexts — with particular interest in the role that gender plays in the construction of the self. She has studied the lives and work of women principals and has conducted a ten-year longitudinal study of women college students' life and career choices in the fields of medicine and education. She is also interested in examining these issues in international contexts, exploring how global and local factors interact in framing educators' life and work.
Smulyan is the co-editor of the Handbook of Gender and Education, with Christine Skelton and Becky Francis (Sage Publications, Ltd., 2006) and author of Balancing Acts: Women Principals at Work (State University of New York Press, 2000). She has co-authored several editions of Adolescent Portraits: Identity, Relationships and Challenges, with Andrew Garrod, Sally Powers, and Robert Kilkenny (Allyn and Bacon, 2007), and Collaborative Action Research: A Developmental Process, with Sharon Oja (Falmer Press,1989). She has also written several articles, including "Choosing to Teach: Resisting a Gendered Identity," Teachers College Record (2004); and "Redefining Self and Success: Becoming Teachers and Doctors," Gender and Education (2004).
Smulyan is actively involved in the Consortium for Excellence in Teacher Education, an association of 19 liberal arts colleges and universities that provide teacher education within a liberal arts context. She has recently contributed a chapter, "'The power of a teacher': Teacher education for social justice," to a book edited by Bjork, Johnston and Ross on teacher education in liberal arts institutions: Taking Teaching Seriously (Paradigm Press, 2007).
Professor Smulyan received her B.A. from Swarthmore College, her M.A.T. from Brown University, and her Ed.D. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
