"I am very pleased to announce that Garikai Campbell, currently Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, has accepted my invitation to serve as Acting Dean of Students, beginning July 1, 2009, and continuing until the College's next Dean of Students is chosen and takes on the responsibility of the office," says President Alfred H. Bloom. "Incoming President Rebecca Chopp shares my delight in this appointment. I know each of you will as well. Garikai will provide exceptional leadership to this critical area of College life. President-designate Chopp has asked me to let you know that, after she takes office on July 1, she will begin planning the selection process for the College's next Dean of Students."

This news follows the announcement last month that Dean of Students Jim Larimore will leave Swarthmore this summer in order to serve as Associate Vice Chancellor for College Life and Dean of Students at NYU Abu Dhabi. In a statement to students, faculty, and staff, he said: "My three years at Swarthmore have been the most enjoyable, rewarding and inspiring period of my professional life. I leave with great gratitude for the lessons I have learned from so many of you, and I will carry what I have learned with me as my family and I embark on this new adventure in a distant land."
